Privacy policy

What data this site collects, what it deliberately does not, which third parties receive it, and how to control advertising cookies.

The short version: ZonaProtec has no server of its own, no accounts and no analytics. We do not know who you are and we are not trying to find out. What follows is the long version, including the parts where third parties do receive data, because those are the parts that actually matter.

What we do not do

We do not ask you to register. There are no user accounts, no newsletter, no contact forms and no comments.

We do not run analytics. There is no Google Analytics, no Plausible, no heatmaps and no session recording on this site. We do not measure you.

We have no database. The site is a set of static files: there is nowhere for us to store anything about you even if we wanted to.

We never sell or share personal data, because we do not hold any to sell.

What stays in your browser

Some preferences are saved on your own device so the site does not forget them between visits. They never leave your browser and we cannot read them:

  • Your theme choice (light or dark).
  • Your language choice, so that entering through the domain does not send you to the wrong version every time.
  • Panel states on the live map, such as whether you collapsed the side bar.
  • A short-lived cache of your last search, held only until you close the tab.

These are stored with localStorage and sessionStorage, not cookies. You can erase all of them by clearing site data in your browser, and nothing breaks: the site simply goes back to its defaults.

What leaves your browser when you use the tools

This is the honest part. Our calculators run entirely on your device, but the tools that consult live conditions have to ask somebody, and that somebody sees the request.

When you search for a location, the place name or coordinates you enter are sent to the official sources in order to query them: the National Weather Service and NOAA for weather, the USGS for earthquakes and volcanoes, NASA EONET and Copernicus for active events, Open-Meteo for forecasts and place lookup, and the equivalent national services where they apply. They receive what is needed to answer, and they answer to your browser directly. Nothing passes through us.

If you use the “locate me” button, your browser asks for your permission first and we never receive the result. The coordinates go to the same official sources described above.

To guess your approximate city or country, the site may query an IP geolocation service — BigDataCloud, ipwho.is or GeoJS depending on the case. These services see your IP address. This is a convenience, not a requirement: if you type your location yourself, it is not used.

We deliberately round coordinates before querying, so the request describes a neighbourhood rather than a doorstep.

Advertising

This site is funded partly by advertising served through Google AdSense.

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and other sites on the internet.

You can opt out of personalised advertising at any time in Google’s Ads Settings, or opt out of third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info. Opting out does not remove advertising; it makes it less relevant to you.

Google’s own explanation of how it uses data from sites that use its services is at google.com/policies/technologies/partner-sites.

Two rules govern where those ads appear, and they are enforced in our code rather than left to whoever builds the page: advertising is placed around the content and never inside a safety instruction, and no ad may be formatted so that it could be mistaken for an emergency button or an official notice.

Our statistics section carries no advertising at all. Its data comes from EM-DAT under a licence that forbids commercial use, so on those pages we load no advertising script whatsoever.

If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will be asked for consent before any advertising cookie is set. You can accept, refuse, or choose purpose by purpose, and refusing is as easy as accepting.

You can change your mind at any time through the consent link in the site footer. Refusing does not restrict your access to anything on this site.

Some pages link to products on Amazon. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. If you follow one of those links, Amazon may set its own cookies to attribute the visit, under Amazon’s own privacy policy.

The commission does not change the price you pay, and it does not change what we recommend.

Fonts

Page typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts, which means Google receives your IP address in order to serve the font files. We mention it because it is a third-party request that most policies leave out.

Your rights

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the GDPR gives you the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict and object to the processing of your personal data, and to lodge a complaint with your national supervisory authority.

There is a practical caveat worth stating plainly: since we hold no personal data and cannot identify you, we usually have nothing to hand over or delete. For advertising data, the party that actually holds it is Google, and their privacy policy explains how to exercise your rights against them.

For anything concerning this site, write to info@zonaprotec.com.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
